Symptoms
- Transmission will not hold in OD/5th gear. It gradually gets worse. Eventually the transmission will not shift back into OD unless you were going down an incline. It will shift out of OD after any sign of load especially after the transmission warms up.
- Transmission will shift fine when it is cold but then will exhibit shifting issues after it warms up.
- Transmission will not shift out of 1st gear into 2nd. The engine will red-line and not shift unless you let up on the accelerator. It will shift from 1st to 2nd if you accelerated very slowly.
- A combination of one and or two would produce a flashing OD light and eventually throw a service engine soon light.
- Codes returned for the described situation P0775 Pressure Control Solenoid B Circuit Malfunction. Others such as P0732 incorrect gear ratio 2nd gear, P0733 incorrect gear ratio 3rd gear, P0735 incorrect gear ratio 5th gear, are also common.
- Problems may occur as early as 70,000 miles and as late as 180,000 miles depending on driving habits..
- This is not a all of a sudden problem if you have been paying attention to how your vehicle shifts
Please Note: The symptoms described above are only that, common symptoms. There may be other issues within the drive train that can cause similar or some of the same symptoms. It is up to you to diagnose your vehicle and if you come to the conclusion you have worn bores, our kit will fix the problem if installed correctly referencing our directions. We are not responsible for misdiagnosis. Results of our survey confirm there are still going to be issues that are misdiagnosed.
Things to do prior to installing our kit
- All transmission solenoids and sensors should be checked for the proper resistance.
- A band adjustment should be done to make sure they are not broken and also that there is enough adjustment left and not work too badly. It also helps in the installation if our kit is installed.
- You should pay very close attention to how it shifts and know what gears it is having problems with. The servos with this issue only deal with shifting from 1st to 2nd, 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd, 4th to 5th, and 5th, delays going into reverse but not 4th or issues with not having any reverse.
How the Servos Work
There is a port in the transmission bore for each that feeds fluid into a cross bore in the servo shaft and up through a counter bore in the shaft to the back side of the piston of each. The pistons have seals that allow pressure to build up between the sealed servo cover and the piston. The shafts for the servos are hardened (very hard!) steel going through a machined aluminum bore in the transmission case (brilliant design!). This gives you a situation of a very hard metal, rubbing against softer aluminum, so the aluminum wears. Not only that the OEM machining has sharp edges that scrape away at the bore. This causes two things. When the transmission is trying to pump fluid between the cover and the piston, it also pumps fluid on the opposite side of the piston through the increased clearances, so those forces are fighting themselves. Also, the transmission bypasses some of the fluid and therefore pressure into the area where the bands are located. So what you have is less pressure available because of the bypass and a reduced pressure on the bands due to fluid pressure building up on both sides of the piston.
The Solution is with our patented Servo Rods!
We have for sale servos including the o-rings for the 5R55W/N/S/E transmissions. With the parts and instructions, you can replace the servos in two to four hours depending on what tools and equipment you have available. We have had this fix in a Mountaineer for 80,000 miles now with no problems whatsoever and one oring set replacement at 54,000 miles. We have had people put these in with 200,000 miles and it fixed the problems. The instructions will give you the tricks to get the job done correctly and quickly, without dropping the transmission. The instructions include recommended tools, pictures, and step-by-step instructions. Boring the housing will cost you $400-$500 in tools, and lot more work.
U.S. Patent No. 9,121,418
We have instructions and fixes that were developed after plenty of research, design, and reasoning into the following issues with the Ford Explorer / Mercury Mountaineer / Lincoln Aviator / 5R55W / 5R55S / 5R55N / 5R55E / 4R44E / 4R55E and other type transmissions with the worn bore issue.
