New Step Added to the Instructions - What are the most important parts of install?

3/15/2014

Initially when we did our studies we found the bores with smooth wearing and some with oval shapes at the bottom leaving a sharp edge.  We are hearing some results of orings prematurely wearing out in less than a year.  Along with that we are getting some reports of rough surfaces in the bores.  We added a step in the instructions to smooth out the bores a bit with 400-600 grit emery paper.  This is done by wrapping the paper around a dowel or drill and running it in and out a dozen time, cleaning out the bore and then installing our kit.  This appears to help the premature wear issue substantially.

We have also run across situation where people are not reading instructions.  Here are the biggest keys to a successful installation.

  1. Smooth out the bores with emery paper.
  2. Make sure you leave the plastic installation sleeve on during assembly.  We still have people who don't read the directions and remove it.
  3. Once you carefully put the servo in up to where the bore touches the assembly sleeve, get everything ready to push it in place.  Make sure you push the servo in using one smooth-quick motion.  If you hesitate at all there is a chance the 1st oring will come out from under the sleeve an will get sheared off on the edge of the bore.

Remember we always ship at no cost replacement orings if needed.

That is it, happy shifting!

Andy

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer that I bought in 2010. This has been a great running vehicle for me; however, out of no where I started having all of these crazy symptoms going on. (OD light flashing, check engine light, throwing codes) I took it to first shop and they said I needed a new transmission, I took it to second shop and they said the same thing. The second shop said there is metal and shavings in my tranasmission. what do you think?

You probably have worn bores and because of the wearing bands, you will get some metal compounds in the bottom of the pan and that is not too much of a concern. More important would be to know how badly the bands are worn. If the problem just started happening they are probably OK. I need a little more information before I can give a better opinion. How many miles are on it? Specifically are you noticing any changes in the shifting like from 1st to 2nd are there delays that you did not have before? What speeds are you driving at when you get the OD flashing? All of these vehicles will eventually have worn bores that our kit will fix but those pieces of information will help us diagnose it better.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer with about 125,000 miles on it. The OD light has flashed on occasion when the truck is at highway speed and have to let off the gas when shifting from first to second, when I accelerate quickly. These issues have occurred for about a year, with the OD issue occurring on most trips over 50 miles and the 1st to 2nd gear issue rarely occurring as I rarely accelerate quickly. Do you think this kit will correct these issues?

It for sure sounds like worn bores and our kit should be the fix.

Thank you. I just ordered.

Also, you mention the bands wear as well. When installing is there something I need to check to make sure the bands aren't too worn?

Robert,

I this is for sure a perfect candidate for our servo kit. If you are the type to be doing the work yourself, you can look at the end of our installation instructions on how to do a band adjustment. If you do one and the shifting improves at all then for sure our kit will work for you. Even if you don't, you sure have the classic symptoms of it.

John,

I am not sure about that. We have had reports about the kit improving how it shifts into reverse. Let us know if it changes that.

Could you use the kit if it's not the original transmission?

Shawn,

Yes you can. But we would have to confirm if it has metal servo caps or aluminum since you won't be able to tie the tranny to a VIN.

This morning my 2000 Mountaineer, w/ 200k miles suddenly wouldn't shift inti reverse. Pushed it out of the drive and once I hit the highway it didn't shift from 3rd to 4th. Then I noticed the OD light flashing. After some research I tested more. If I start with OD off, and leave it off, it never flashes, just no OD/5th gear. Not sure if I have 1st gear either.

Pulled codes and I get 2, incorrect ratio for 3rd and 5th.

Had bit really noticed any problems before now, though possibly some slipping on steep hills (mountain driveway on vacation).

Think these servos ate at fault?
Won't have a chance to check the bands/solenoids for a few days and this is my only transportation at the moment.

2003 Ford Explorer ( Exploder) Great product !!! After 3 different quotes from transmission shops, from 1000.00 - 3000.00 $$ AND 3 different diagnosis for a PO775 code AND no guarantee to boot, we opted for your kit. OD and service engine light on at 144000 miles with a delayed shift at 3000-4000 RPM from 1st to 2nd. Took a deep breath and dug in with kit. 5 1/2 hrs later the truck is back to its full glory !! Shifting like a champ THANK YOU
