1st Time for a JAG

1/6/2011

Working with my 1st 5R55N Jaguar with a gentleman from Minnesota.  JAG does not have any cross reference information available for the servo part numbers.  It is a 2002 and the part numbers are the same as a Lincoln LS.  The OD parts are the same as the 5R55W explorer parts but the IM is much smaller.  The owner ended up sending me his original and I machined it for him.  For the 2002 LS and the JAG, There are two sizes of IM servos that I got the part numbers for from Ford.

The descriptions of the two parts are as follows:
Piston, Intermediate Servo (Bonded)(3.505"OD Large Lip) (2.520"OD Small Lip)
Piston, Intermediate Servo (Bonded) (3.505"OD) (2.820"OD Small Lip)

Given this experience I would be able to track down fairly easy part numbers for Lincoln's and Jaguar's.

I WANT TO SAY, YOU ARE SO INOVATIVE TO COME UP WITH THIS FIX. I WANT TO SAY THAT I BEGAN TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND TOOK IT TO 3 TRANS SHOPS. ALL OF THEM SAID WELL WE HAVE TO OVERHAUL THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $1300 TO $2100 DOLLARS TO REPAIR. MY WIFE AND I WERE GOING TO BUY HER A NEW CAR AND I TAKE OVER THIS 2003 FORD EXPLORER THATS A 6 CYLINDER AND IN THE BEST OF SHAPE. I DECIDED TO CHECK YOUR SIGHT OUT AND READ INTO THE PROBLEM THAT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT YOU SAID WAS HAPPENING TO THESE VEHICLE WITH THIS TYPE OF TRANSMISSION. I TALKED IT OVER WITH MY WIFE AND WE ORDER THE KIT. IT CAME IN AND I LET A CLOSE FRIEND WHO WAS A MASTER MECHANIC LOOK AT THE INSTRUCTTIONS AND SEE IF HE WOULD WANT TO TRY IT. HE LLOK AT IT AND WE DROP THE VEHICLE OFF FROM ORDERING THE PARTS FROM YOUR COMPANY WHICH CAME LIKE YOU SAID IN LESS THEN 3 DAYS. THIS TECH MADE US NO PROMISES, BUT CHARGE ME AND MY WIFE $300.00 LABOR WITH YOUR KIT WHICH COST US $220.00 A TOTAL OF $520.00 AND IT HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND THE ENGINE LITE IS OFF AND THE TRANS SHIFT GREATER THEN IT EVER DID. THIS WAS THE GREATEST SAVING I HAVE HAD ON REPAIRS FROM GETTING A ESTIMATE FROM ANY REPAIR SHOP. I WANT TO TELL ANY CUSTOMERS THAT IS THINKING ABOUT THIS TO TRY THIS REPAIR BEFORE GETTING RIP OFF FROM THE TRANS SHOP. IT S FUNNY BUT I TOOK MY TRANS BACK TO THE SHOP THAT GAVE ME THIS CRAZY OFFER AND HE FORGOT THAT HE HAD GAVE ME A ESTIMATE ON REPAIRING THIS TRANSMISSION. HE TOOK VEHICLE FOR A ROAD TEST AND LOOK AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY FROM DRIVING IT AND SAYING TO ME "NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS TRANS AND NO OPEN CODES AND THE TRANS FLUID IS SUPER RED WHICH IS GOOD" HE WENT ON AND SAID YOU HAVE A GREAT TRANSMISSION. I WAS SO EMBARRASS TO TELL HIM THAT YOU FIX REPAIRED THE PROBLEM FROM WHAT HIS SHOP JUST A MONTH LATER GAVE ME A $1900.00 ESTIMATE. I LEFT OUT THAT SHOP AND SAID I WOULD WRITE MY EXPERIENCE AFTER 2 MONTHS OF DRIVING. WELL, IT S NOW 3 MONTHS FROM WHEN THE REPAIRS WERE DONE. THIS TRANS IS STILL RUNNING IN TIP TOP PERFORMANCE, AND WE ARE LEAVING MONDAY TO GO TO CANCOON, MEXICO WITH THE MONEY YOU HELP US TO SAVE ON THIS TRANSMISSION REPAIR. ANYBODY CAN EMAIL ME AT COPAID@MSN IF THEY WANT ANY GREAT ADVISE ON DOING THIS REPAIR. I GIVE THIS REPAIR THIS PATENT FROM THIS GENTLEMAN THE HIGHEST LAUDATION. THANK YOU SOO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH AGAIN.

I think I may be the second Jaguar customer for these servos. Mine is a 2000 S-Type 3.0 Liter V6 with a 5R55N trans and 180,000 miles.
My transmission was slipping, trouble upshifting into 2nd and 5th, gradually got worse, eventually generated fault code P0775 (Pressure Control Solenoid B Malfunction) with “Gearbox Fault” error message on instrument panel. It would only shift up with slow acceleration, behaving as if it was low on fluid, though it was not, and I even tried overfilling it. Usually it would work ok going through the J-gate 2-3-4-D. Also when putting it in D there was a delay of several seconds before it would engage.
I installed these servos and my problem was immediately fixed.
Ford makes these trannys with several different diameter servos, and information on exactly which servos are used in the Jaguar S-Type is difficult to find and not always accurate, even if you have the serial numbers from the tag on the outside. Jaguar is not forthcoming with this information for some reason. Andy sent the wrong ones the first time due to incorrect information, but corrected the mistake promptly. The best way is to remove your old servos and quote the part numbers and colored dots on them when placing your order. Then compare them with the new ones when they arrive.
The trans does not have to come out to do this job. I did it with my brother on his lift.
On the replacement servos the o-rings and grooves were different sizes, so be sure to get the o-rings on the right grooves.
