My 2003 Ford Explorer with 154K miles is exhibiting these exact problems. My mechanic is talking a complete rebuild with boring out putting in a sleeve for the servo. He says that the servo wears out the metal around it causing it to slant and bore a bigger hole. My concern is that he says metal filings fall into the tranny and mess up the shift box. They also clog up the solenoid, thus the 775 error.

Anyone heard of this? If I have him do this fix, will the metal filings still be in there and will that cause a problem?

Jim,

Some of what your mechanic says is true but here is what I think and suggest. Yes the bores do wear and the filings are not the way I would describe them they are probably more like metal powder and should all get picked up by the filter. The bore is open to the bottom of the pan and the only way they will get up into the solenoid block it through the filter. They would also be small engough that even if they did get through they should not be capable of plugging anything up.

The bores do continue to wear even with my fix. However, the slant on the servo is so small it does not affect how the transmission operates. The o-rings are designed to take up all if not most of the wear and seal off the bore to keep the pressures wear it needs to be for a very long time. The most wear that I have ever heard of is .015". The O-rings are designed to take up to .032" of wear and more. Keep in mind the design from day one always had a percentage of leakeage becuase there were no seals on the rods. Even while the wearing continues, you are always sealing off more of the leakage than what Ford originally designed into it.
